Teaching Requirements in Japan

For ESL & Language Centers (Eikaiwa schools, JET program):

  • Native English speaker (UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa)
     
  • Bachelor’s degree (any subject)
     
  • TEFL/TESOL certification (preferred, sometimes optional)
     
  • No prior teaching experience required for many programs
     

For International Schools:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a subject-specific field (English, Math, Science, etc.)
     
  • PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification
     
  • At least 1–2 years of teaching experience
