  • Most schools provide housing assistance or subsidies
  • If renting privately: 
    • One-bedroom apartment in Tokyo: 800 – 1,500 USD
    • One-bedroom apartment in smaller cities: 400 – 1,000 USD


Food and Dining

Teaching Requirements in Japan

Japan has specific requirements depending on the type of teaching position.

For ESL and language centers (Eikaiwa schools, JET program):

  • Native English speaker from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa
  • Bachelor’s degree (any subject)
  • TEFL/TESOL certification (preferred but not always required)
  • No prior teaching experience required for many programs

For international schools:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a subject-specific degree (English, Math, Science)
  • PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification
  • At least one to two years of teaching experience required
